Hindusthani Music History HIN 100
This semester-long course in Hindustani music provides a comprehensive exploration of the rich traditions, theories, and historical developments of this classical music genre. From its pre-historic origins to the major figures and historical events that shaped its evolution, students will delve into the intricacies of Hindustani music theory, including ragas, talas, alankars, and bandishes. They will also study the contributions of key figures such as Tansen, Amir Khusro, and Allauddin Khan, as well as the influence of major historical movements like the Mughal era and the Bhakti movement. Additionally, students will gain insights into contemporary trends, fusion music, regional variations, and the challenges and future directions of Hindustani music. Through this course, students will develop a deep appreciation for this rich cultural heritage and gain the necessary knowledge to engage with and critically analyze Hindustani music.
